Working with us
Passionate about enriching the industry with valuable resources and providing opportunities for new entrants to what we truly believe is a highly regarded and rewarding career, we decided to introduce a formal yet bespoke Site Engineer Training Programme in 2020.
Engineers
Through a combination of “classroom” and on-site learning environments our training programme, developed by our Training & Quality Manager Steve Jones (a former Surveyor/Engineer of 20 years), provides would-be Engineers a grounding in all aspects of the role.
From the use of CAD for extracting design information, manipulating drawings and processing surveys, the accurate use and care of equipment such as Total Stations and Levels, the physical acts of setting-out and surveying for all manner of Construction activities, to maintaining accurate records whilst being professional, cooperative and reliable throughout.
Thrilled to be part of such a smart, driven team with excellent professional opportunities and personal development!

Training with us
So far, we’ve recruited Trainees from an array of backgrounds – ex-Groundworkers, Graduates, T-Level Students and others looking for a career change – whom we’ve been able to successfully develop by tailoring their training, enhancing their strengths and addressing their weaknesses.
All our Trainees have a one characteristic in common though which is something we look for during the recruitment process – a hunger to learn and develop as a Site Engineer.
Our varied customer base puts SEP Engineers in a fortunate position, it enables us to expose our Trainees to an array of Construction operations early in their careers, cultivating a well-rounded project portfolio and obtaining invaluable experience they can call upon at any time in the future.
Trainees
Whilst on site our Trainees are assigned to a Mentor, a senior member of our team who introduces them to the roles, responsibilities and routines required to operate as a high-calibre Site Engineer. Our Mentors challenge the Trainees to complete supervised tasks to gain confidence in the use of equipment, reading drawings, processing data, completing QA checks, etc.
As confidence and competence grow, supervision lessens – eventually we entrust our Trainees to work unsupervised and unaccompanied, tackling tasks and contracts for customers as sole Engineer. This is all done with the continued support of our Training & Quality Manager both physically and remotely – embracing modern technologies we use video calls and are able to “dial-in” to our Engineers’ Total Stations, our Training & Quality Manager can see what the Trainee sees and provide guidance in the most efficient way possible.
We reinforce the in-house training by enrolling Trainee Engineers on the ProQual Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Surveying course. Introduced by The Survey Association, this vocational course provides a minimum standard for Engineers & Surveyors and enables graduates to obtain a Gold CSCS card.
Good understanding of construction drawings and plans – ability to interpret and work from technical documentation accurately.
Practical knowledge of surveying equipment – familiarity with tools like total stations, GPS, and levels.
Attention to detail – ability to ensure high accuracy in all measurements and markings.
Strong communication skills – able to work well with the site team, subcontractors, and supervisors.
Problem-solving mindset – flexibility and quick thinking to tackle site-specific challenges.
Commitment to health and safety – thorough understanding of safety practices on construction sites.
Team player attitude – willingness to learn from experienced colleagues and contribute positively to the team.
Desire for professional growth – eagerness to develop skills and take on more responsibility over time.
